Chapter 11
While I was out fetching my aunt her lotto tickets, cornbread mix and sugar, I stopped by Popeye’s and grabbed a two-piece chicken dinner. I called and asked her if she wanted something, but she said she was good.
On the ride home, I thought about Silas. Just so he could sleep better tonight, I sent him a text letting him know I made it to Savannah.
Instantly, he replied, “Thank you for letting me know. We’ll work out our issues when we get back to Atlanta.”
I didn’t reply to his message. I’m serious. I’m done with this relationship shit.
When I got back in the house, I placed the food up in the cabinet. I handed my aunt her lotto tickets and her change. I sat down at the table and opened my Popeye’s box.
Just as she was getting ready to speak, her house phone stared to ring. It must have been one of her girlfriends, because she instantly got into gossip mode.
I exhaled and ate my chicken in peace. After I finished my food, she hung up the phone. She looked at me and said, “That was Mary. She told me to tell you hey, and you better come see her while you’re home.”
“Ok,” I said. Mary was my aunt’s best friend.
“What you got planned for the evening?” she asked.
“Nothing, really.”
“Well, I’m just letting you know—you getting ya’ ass up and coming to church with me in the morning.”
“Auntie, I’m tired,” I said. “I’ve been driving all day.”
“Well, get ya’ ass in the bed. I ain’t tell you to take ya’ ass to Panama City. Ain’t shit changed ‘round here. You can give the Lord a few hours of your time.”
Fuck the Lord.
“The last time ya’ ass probably went to church is when you were here during Christmas, two years ago.” she said. “I know you ain’t going to church up there in Atlanta. If the Lord treated us the way the way we treat him—”
“Where is Tacari?” I cut her off. I didn’t want to hear that bullshit.
“He’s at work. He’ll be home later.”
“Well, I’m gonna go relax for a lil bit,” I kissed her on the cheek, before placing the Popeye’s box in the garbage.
“Ight, now, set that clock,” she said, as I hurried off to my room. She yelled, “We’re leaving at 10:30 in the morning!”
I sat down on my childhood bed, and exhaled. I grabbed my arms, as goosebumps overcame my body.
I scooted up to the head of the bed and laid down. I looked to my left and stared at my nightstand.
I grabbed the old family picture of my mom, stepdad, older brother, Russell, and me. We all looked so happy back then. I couldn’t have been any older than four years old.
I never knew or met my biological father, even though I carried his last name, Harkless. The man I knew to act as my dad was named, Fred. My mom, Josephine, was in love with him. I was five when everything in my life started to change.
